Job 41
Can You Draw Out Leviathan?
“Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook
or press down its tongue with a cord?
Can you put a rope through its nose
or pierce its jaw with a hook?
Will it multiply pleas to you?
Will it speak soft words to you?
Will it make a covenant with you
so that you take it as a servant forever?
Will you play with it as with a bird
or tie it up for your girls?
Will traders bargain over it?
Will they divide it among merchants?
Can you fill its skin with harpoons
or its head with fishing spears?
Put your hand upon it;
remember the battle—
you will not do it again!
No One Is Fierce Enough to Stir It
Look, one’s hope concerning it is false;
is one not cast down even at the sight of it?
No one is so fierce that he dares stir it up.
Who then is able to stand before me?
Who has first given to me, that I should repay him?
Whatever is under all the heavens is mine.
I Will Not Be Silent About Its Limbs
I will not be silent about its limbs,
or the word of its might,
or the grace of its form.
Who can uncover the face of its garment?
Who can enter its double row of teeth?
Who can open the doors of its face?
Around its teeth is terror.
Its back is rows of shields,
shut up tightly with a seal.
One is so near another
that no air can come between them.
They cling to one another;
they hold together and cannot be separated.
Its Sneezings Flash Light
Its sneezings flash light,
and its eyes are like the eyelids of dawn.
From its mouth go burning torches;
sparks of fire leap out.
From its nostrils smoke goes out,
as from a boiling pot over reeds.
Its breath kindles coals,
and flame goes out from its mouth.
Strength dwells in its neck,
and terror dances before it.
The folds of its flesh cling together;
they are firm upon it and cannot be moved.
Its heart is hard as stone,
hard as the lower millstone.
The Mighty Are Afraid
When it rises, mighty ones are afraid;
because of the crashing they lose themselves.
The sword that reaches it does not stand,
nor spear, dart, or javelin.
It regards iron as straw
and bronze as rotten wood.
An arrow does not make it flee;
sling stones become stubble to it.
Clubs are regarded as stubble,
and it laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
It Makes the Deep Boil Like a Pot
Its undersides are like sharp potsherds;
it spreads a threshing sledge upon the mud.
It makes the deep boil like a pot;
it makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
Behind it, it makes a path shine;
one would think the deep had white hair.
On earth there is nothing like it,
a creature made without fear.
It looks upon everything high;
it is king over all the children of pride.”
