Job 42

Job Answers the LORD

1Then Job answered the LORD and said: 2“I know that you can do all things
and that no purpose of yours can be withheld. 3‘Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?’
Therefore I declared what I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. 4‘Hear now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you make me know.’ 5By the hearing of the ear I had heard of you,
but now my eye has seen you. 6Therefore I reject
and relent concerning dust and ashes.”

The LORD Rebukes the Friends

7After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My anger burns against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken concerning me what is right, as my servant Job has. 8So now take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job. Offer a burnt offering for yourselves, and my servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept his face, so that I do not deal with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken concerning me what is right, as my servant Job has.” 9Then Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD spoke to them, and the LORD accepted Job’s face.

The LORD Restores Job

10The LORD restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the LORD added to all that Job had, double. 11Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him and ate bread with him in his house. They showed him sympathy and comforted him concerning all the trouble that the LORD had brought upon him. Each gave him one piece of silver and one gold ring. 12The LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female donkeys. 13He also had seven sons and three daughters. 14He called the name of the first Jemimah, the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-Happuch. 15In all the land no women were found as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. 16After this Job lived one hundred forty years and saw his children and his children’s children, four generations. 17Then Job died, old and full of days.
