The Shared Word Project

License & Attribution

Free to read. Free to copy, publish, adapt, and reuse—even commercially. No royalties, subscriptions, fees, donations, or permission requests. Only the attribution conditions of CC BY 4.0 apply to the English translation texts.

No money. No special permission.

The Word of God should not be confined by a price or a publisher. These English translation texts are offered to be shared in worship, education, printed books, electronic publications, websites, apps, and new works for generations to come. There is no payment, royalty, subscription, or request for individual permission required. Reuse is governed by attribution under CC BY 4.0, not by a paid license.

Two translations, one open license

The Shared Word Translation (TSW) and Fluent Translation biblical texts are each offered under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0).

Under CC BY 4.0, you may share and adapt either English translation for any purpose, including commercial use, provided that you give appropriate credit, link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may not suggest that the project endorses your work or impose additional legal or technical restrictions that prevent the freedoms granted by this license. Separate third-party materials, illustrations, manuscripts, and software may have different licenses.

Recommended attribution

The Shared Word Translation (TSW), The Shared Word Project, CC BY 4.0 (license). State any modifications.

Fluent Translation, The Shared Word Project, CC BY 4.0 (license). State any modifications.

Support is not a condition of use

There is no payment associated with permission to use either translation. Neither a donation nor financial support is required, and no permission request or royalty is ever necessary under the stated license.

Software uses separate licenses

Software distributed alongside the translation may use a separate software license. Check the relevant plugin, application, or package for the license that governs the software itself.
