Luke 22
The Plot to Kill Jesus
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was drawing near. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put him to death, for they were fearing the people.
And Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might deliver him over to them. And they were glad and agreed to give him money. And he consented and was seeking an opportunity to deliver him over to them apart from a crowd.
The Preparation of the Passover
And the day of Unleavened Bread came, on which it was necessary to sacrifice the Passover. And he sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare for us the Passover, so that we may eat it.” And they said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”
And he said to them, “Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters, and you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare there.”
And going, they found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
The Last Supper
And when the hour came, he reclined, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you that I will certainly not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
And taking a cup, having given thanks, he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink from the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”
And taking bread, having given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
But behold, the hand of the one betraying me is with me on the table. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” And they began to question among themselves which of them it might be who was going to do this.
Who Is the Greatest?
And there arose also a dispute among them as to which of them is considered to be greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those having authority over them are called benefactors. But you are not so; rather, let the greater among you become like the younger, and the one leading like the one serving.
For who is greater, the one reclining or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining? But I am among you as the one serving.
But you are those who have remained with me in my trials, and I assign to you, just as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail; and you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
And he said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” And he said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know me.”
Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus
And he said to them, “When I sent you without purse and bag and sandals, did you lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.” And he said to them, “But now, the one having a purse must take it, and likewise a bag; and the one not having a sword must sell his cloak and buy one.
For I say to you that this which is written must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was counted with the lawless’; for indeed what concerns me has its fulfillment.” And they said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
And going out, he went according to his custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into testing.”
And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and kneeling down he was praying, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.”
And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. And being in agony, he was praying more earnestly, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.
And rising from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray so that you may not enter into testing.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
While he was still speaking, behold, a crowd, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them, and he approached Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
And those around him, seeing what was going to happen, said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But answering, Jesus said, “No more of this.” And touching his ear, he healed him.
And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the authority of darkness.”
Peter Denies Jesus
And seizing him, they led him away and brought him into the house of the high priest. But Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.
And a certain servant girl, seeing him sitting in the light, looked intently at him and said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.”
And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” And after about an hour had passed, another strongly affirmed, saying, “Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And going out, he wept bitterly.
Jesus Mocked and Beaten
And the men holding Jesus were mocking him and beating him. And blindfolding him, they were asking him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” And they were speaking many other things against him, blaspheming him.
Jesus Before the Council
And when day came, the council of elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will certainly not believe; and if I ask you, you will certainly not answer.
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” And they all said, “Are you then the Son of God?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” And they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we ourselves have heard it from his mouth.”
