Luke 21
The Widow’s Offering
And looking up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and he saw also a certain poor widow putting in two small coins. And he said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings, but she out of her poverty put in all the life she had.”
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
And while some were speaking about the temple, how it had been adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, he said, “These things that you see—days will come in which not one stone will be left upon another that will not be thrown down.”
Signs of the End of the Age
And they asked him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?” And he said, “See that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Do not go after them.
And when you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must happen first, but the end is not immediately.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
But before all these things they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to synagogues and prisons, being brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake. It will turn out for you as a testimony. Therefore set it in your hearts not to prepare beforehand how to defend yourselves, for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
But you will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. And you will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.
The Destruction of Jerusalem
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those in the midst of her must depart, and those in the countryside must not enter her, because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that has been written.
Woe to those who are pregnant and to those nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress upon the land and wrath against this people. And they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
The Coming of the Son of Man
“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting from fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; when they already sprout, seeing it, you know by yourselves that summer is now near. So also you, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
Truly I say to you that this generation will certainly not pass away until all things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away.
Watch Yourselves
“But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those dwelling on the face of all the earth.
But be alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Jesus Teaches in the Temple
And during the days he was teaching in the temple, but at night he would go out and spend the night on the mount called Olivet. And all the people were coming early in the morning to him in the temple to hear him.
