Luke 23
Jesus Before Pilate
And rising up, the whole assembly of them led him to Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”
And Pilate asked him, saying, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And answering him, he said, “You say so.” And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” But they were insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to here.”
Jesus Before Herod
But when Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. And learning that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was himself also in Jerusalem in those days.
And when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some sign done by him. And he questioned him with many words, but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.
And Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him, and dressing him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate became friends with one another in that very day, for before they had been at enmity with each other.
Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified
And Pilate, calling together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said to them, “You brought me this man as one misleading the people, and behold, I, having examined him before you, found no guilt in this man concerning the charges you bring against him. But neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us; and behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by him. Therefore, having disciplined him, I will release him.”
But they cried out all together, saying, “Take this man away, and release to us Barabbas”— who had been thrown into prison for a certain insurrection in the city and for murder.
Again Pilate addressed them, wanting to release Jesus, but they were shouting, saying, “Crucify, crucify him!” And he said to them a third time, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no cause for death; therefore I will punish him and release him.”
But they were pressing him with loud voices, demanding that he be crucified, and their voices were prevailing. And Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. And he released the one who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they were asking for, but he delivered Jesus over to their will.
The Crucifixion
And as they were leading him away, they seized a certain Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and laid on him the cross to carry behind Jesus.
And a great multitude of the people were following him, and women who were mourning and lamenting him. But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
For behold, days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ For if they do these things in the green tree, what will happen in the dry?”
And two others, who were criminals, were being led away with him to be put to death. And when they came to the place called “The Skull,” there they crucified him and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left.
And Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And dividing his garments, they cast lots. And the people stood watching, and the rulers also were sneering at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his Chosen One.”
And the soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” And there was also an inscription over him: “This is the king of the Jews.”
And one of the criminals who were hanging was blaspheming him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But answering, the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for what we did; but this man has done nothing improper.”
And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
The Death of Jesus
And it was already about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun was darkened, and the curtain of the temple was torn in the middle.
And crying out with a loud voice, Jesus said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” And having said this, he breathed his last.
And seeing what had happened, the centurion was glorifying God, saying, “Certainly this man was righteous.” And all the crowds who had come together for this spectacle, seeing what had happened, were returning, beating their chests. And all his acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance, seeing these things.
Jesus Is Buried
And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man (he had not consented to their plan and action), from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
And taking it down, he wrapped it in linen and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had yet been laid. And it was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning.
And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid. And returning, they prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
