Job 39

Do You Know When the Mountain Goats Give Birth?

“Do you know the time when the mountain goats give birth?
Do you watch when the deer is in labor?
Can you count the months they fulfill?
Do you know the time when they give birth,
when they crouch and bring forth their young
and release their labor pains?
Their young become strong and grow in the open field;
they go out and do not return to them.

Who Set the Wild Donkey Free?

Who set the wild donkey free?
Who loosened the bonds of the wild ass,
whose house I made the Arabah
and whose dwelling the salt land?
He laughs at the tumult of the city;
he does not hear the shouts of the driver.
He searches the mountains for his pasture
and seeks after every green thing.

Will the Wild Ox Serve You?

Will the wild ox be willing to serve you?
Will it spend the night beside your manger?
Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with a rope?
Will it harrow the valleys after you?
Will you trust it because its strength is great
and leave your labor to it?
Will you trust it to bring back your seed
and gather it to your threshing floor?

The Wings of the Ostrich Flutter

The wings of the ostrich flutter joyfully,
but are they the pinions and feathers of the stork?
For she leaves her eggs on the ground
and warms them in the dust,
forgetting that a foot may crush them
or a wild animal trample them.
She treats her young harshly, as though they were not hers;
she does not fear that her labor may be in vain,
because God made her forget wisdom
and did not give her a share in understanding.
But when she lifts herself to run,
she laughs at horse and rider.

Do You Give the Horse Its Might?

Do you give the horse its might?
Do you clothe its neck with a mane?
Do you make it leap like a locust?
The majesty of its snorting is terror.
It paws in the valley and rejoices in strength;
it goes out to meet weapons.
It laughs at fear and is not terrified;
it does not turn back from the sword.
Upon it the quiver rattles,
the flashing spear and javelin.
With shaking and rage it swallows the ground;
it cannot stand still when the horn sounds.
At every blast of the horn it says, ‘Aha!’
It smells the battle from far away,
the thunder of commanders and the war cry.

Does the Hawk Fly by Your Wisdom?

Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars
and spreads its wings toward the south?
Is it at your command that the eagle rises
and makes its nest high?
On the rock it dwells and spends the night,
on the crag of the rock, a stronghold.
From there it searches out food;
its eyes see from far away.
Its young suck blood,
and where the slain are, there it is.”
