Amos 2

Against Moab

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Moab, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
he burned the bones of Edom’s king into lime. I will send fire into Moab,
and it will consume Kerioth’s citadels.
Moab will die amid uproar,
with battle cries and the sound of a ram’s horn. I will cut off the judge from her midst
and kill all her rulers with him,” says the LORD.

Against Judah

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Judah, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they rejected the LORD’s instruction
and did not keep his decrees.
Their lies led them astray,
the lies their ancestors followed. I will send fire into Judah,
and it will consume Jerusalem’s citadels.”

Against Israel

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Israel, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they sell the innocent for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals. They crave even the dust of the ground on the heads of the poor
and twist the path of the afflicted.
A man and his father go to the same young woman,
profaning my holy name. They stretch out beside every altar
on clothes taken as pledges,
and in the house of their God
they drink wine taken in fines. Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
tall as cedars and strong as oaks.
I destroyed his fruit above
and his roots below. I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and led you through the wilderness for forty years
to take possession of the Amorite’s land. I raised up some of your sons as prophets
and some of your young men as Nazirites.
Is this not so, people of Israel?” declares the LORD. “But you made the Nazirites drink wine
and commanded the prophets, ‘Do not prophesy!’ Now I will press down beneath you
as a cart loaded with sheaves presses down. The swift will have no escape;
the strong will find no strength;
the warrior will not save his life. The archer will not stand his ground;
the fleet-footed will not escape;
the horseman will not save his life. Even the bravest of warriors
will flee naked on that day,” declares the LORD.
