Amos 2
Judgment on Moab
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Moab,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because he burned the bones
of the king of Edom
to lime.
So I will send fire upon Moab,
and it will consume the fortresses of Kerioth.
Moab will die amid uproar,
with a shout,
with the sound of a ram’s horn.
I will cut off the judge from her midst
and kill all her officials with him,
says the LORD.
Judgment on Judah
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Judah,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they rejected the instruction of the LORD
and did not keep his statutes.
Their lies led them astray,
those after which their ancestors walked.
So I will send fire upon Judah,
and it will consume
the fortresses of Jerusalem.
Judgment on Israel
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they sell the righteous for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals—
those who pant after the dust of the earth
upon the head of the poor
and turn aside the way of the humble.
A man and his father go in to the same young woman,
so that they profane my holy name.
On garments taken in pledge
they stretch themselves beside every altar,
and in the house of their God
they drink wine
from those who have been fined.
Yet I Destroyed the Amorite before You
Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them,
whose height was like the height of cedars
and who was strong like the oaks.
I destroyed his fruit above
and his roots beneath.
And I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and led you in the wilderness forty years
to possess the land of the Amorite.
I raised up some of your sons as prophets
and some of your young men as Nazirites.
Is this not so, children of Israel?
says the LORD.
But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
and you commanded the prophets, saying,
“You shall not prophesy.”
I Will Press You Down
Look, I am pressing down upon you
as a cart presses
when it is full of sheaves.
Flight will perish from the swift,
the strong will not strengthen his power,
and the warrior will not save his life.
The one who handles the bow will not stand,
the swift of foot will not escape,
and the rider of the horse
will not save his life.
Even the stout-hearted among the warriors
will flee naked on that day,
says the LORD.
