Amos 1

The LORD roars

These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheep breeders of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel during the reigns of Uzziah king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. He said:
“The LORD roars from Zion
and raises his voice from Jerusalem.
The shepherds’ pastures mourn,
and the summit of Carmel dries up.”

Against Damascus

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they threshed Gilead with iron threshing sledges. I will send fire into the house of Hazael,
and it will consume Ben-hadad’s citadels. I will break the gate bar of Damascus,
cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven
and the scepter-holder from Beth-eden.
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,” says the LORD.

Against Gaza

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Gaza, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they deported an entire community
to hand them over to Edom. I will send fire into Gaza’s wall,
and it will consume her citadels. I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod
and the scepter-holder from Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remaining Philistines will perish,”
says the Lord GOD.

Against Tyre

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Tyre, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they handed an entire community over to Edom
and did not remember a covenant of brothers. I will send fire into Tyre’s wall,
and it will consume her citadels.”

Against Edom

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of Edom, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
he pursued his brother with a sword
and destroyed his compassion.
His anger tore on and on;
he kept his fury forever. I will send fire into Teman,
and it will consume Bozrah’s citadels.”

Against Ammon

This is what the LORD says:
“For three rebellions of the Ammonites, and for four,
I will not turn it back:
they ripped open Gilead’s pregnant women
to enlarge their territory. I will set fire to Rabbah’s wall,
and it will consume her citadels,
amid shouts on the day of battle,
amid a whirlwind on the day of storm. Their king will go into exile,
he and his rulers together,” says the LORD.
