Amos 1
The Words of Amos
The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
He said:
The LORD roars from Zion
and gives his voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the summit of Carmel dries up.
Judgment on Damascus
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Damascus,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they threshed Gilead
with sledges of iron.
So I will send fire
upon the house of Hazael,
and it will consume
the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.
I will break the bar of Damascus
and cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven
and the one who holds the scepter from Beth-Eden.
The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir,
says the LORD.
Judgment on Gaza
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Gaza,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they carried into exile a whole population
to hand them over to Edom.
So I will send fire
upon the wall of Gaza,
and it will consume
her fortresses.
I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod
and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,
says the Lord GOD.
Judgment on Tyre
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Tyre,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they handed over a whole population to Edom
and did not remember
the covenant of brothers.
So I will send fire
upon the wall of Tyre,
and it will consume
her fortresses.
Judgment on Edom
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of Edom,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because he pursued his brother with the sword
and destroyed his compassion.
His anger tore continually,
and he kept his fury forever.
So I will send fire
upon Teman,
and it will consume
the fortresses of Bozrah.
Judgment on Ammon
Thus says the LORD:
For three transgressions of the children of Ammon,
and for four,
I will not turn it back,
because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
in order to enlarge their territory.
So I will kindle fire
upon the wall of Rabbah,
and it will consume her fortresses
with a shout on the day of battle,
with a storm on the day of whirlwind.
Their king will go into exile,
he and his officials together,
says the LORD.
