Romans 6
Dying and Living with Christ
What then should we say? Should we continue in sin so that grace may increase? Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the Father’s glory, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For the one who has died has been freed from sin.
But if we died with Christ, we trust that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will never die again. Death no longer rules over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Do Not Let Sin Reign
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. Do not present the parts of your body to sin as weapons of unrighteousness. Instead, present yourselves to God as people brought from death to life, and the parts of your body to God as weapons of righteousness. Sin will not rule over you, because you are not under Law but under grace.
Slaves of Righteousness
What then? Should we sin because we are not under Law but under grace? Absolutely not! Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one you obey—either sin, which leads to death, or obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God! Though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you once presented the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to further lawlessness, now present them as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with respect to righteousness. What fruit did you have then from the things you are now ashamed of? Their end is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and become slaves of God, the fruit you have leads to holiness, and its end is eternal life. For sin’s wages are death, but God’s free gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
