Psalm 44

What Our Ancestors Told Us

O God, with our ears we have heard;
our ancestors have told us
the work you worked in their days,
in days of old.
With your hand you drove out nations,
but you planted our people;
you afflicted peoples,
but you spread our people out.
For not by their sword
did they possess the land,
and their arm did not save them;
but your right hand and your arm,
and the light of your face,
because you delighted in them.

You Are My King

You are my King, O God;
command saving help for Jacob.
Through you we push back our foes;
through your name we tread down
those who rise against us.
For I do not trust in my bow,
and my sword does not save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
and put to shame those who hate us.
In God we boast all day long,
and we praise your name forever.
Selah.

Yet You Have Rejected Us

Yet you have rejected us
and put us to shame,
and you do not go out
with our armies.
You make us turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us
plunder for themselves.
You give us like sheep for food,
and you scatter us among the nations.
You sell your people for no gain;
you gain nothing from their price.

You make us a reproach to our neighbors,
a scorn and derision
to those around us.
You make us a proverb among the nations,
a shaking of the head among the peoples.
All day my disgrace is before me,
and the shame of my face covers me,
at the voice of the one who taunts and reviles,
before the enemy and the avenger.

We Have Not Forgotten You

All this has come upon us,
yet we have not forgotten you,
and we have not dealt falsely
with your covenant.
Our heart has not turned back,
and our steps have not departed
from your path,
though you crushed us
in a place of jackals
and covered us
with the shadow of death.

If we had forgotten
the name of our God
or spread out our hands
to a foreign god,
would not God discover this?
For God knows
the secrets of the heart.
Yet for your sake
we are killed all day long;
we are counted
as sheep for slaughter.

Rise Up and Help Us

Awake!
Why do you sleep, Lord?
Rouse yourself;
do not reject us forever.
Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget
our affliction and oppression?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the earth.
Rise up;
be our help.
Redeem us
for the sake of your steadfast love.
