Shared Word Translation
Psalm 42
Thirst for the Living God
As a deer longs
for channels of water,
so my soul longs for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come
and appear before the face of God?
My tears have been my bread
day and night,
while they say to me all day,
“Where is your God?”
Remembering the House of God
These things I remember
as I pour out my soul within me:
how I passed with the throng,
leading them in procession
to the house of God,
with the sound of rejoicing and thanksgiving,
a multitude keeping festival.
Why are you bowed down, my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God,
for I shall again praise God,
the saving help of God’s face.
Deep Calls to Deep
My God,
my soul is bowed down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
at the sound of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have passed over me.
By day the LORD commands
steadfast love,
and at night the LORD’s song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.
Why Have You Forgotten Me?
I say to God, my rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
under the oppression of the enemy?”
As with a crushing in my bones,
my adversaries reproach me,
while they say to me all day,
“Where is your God?”
Why are you bowed down, my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God,
for I shall again praise God,
the saving help of my face
and my God.
