The Boundaries of Canaan

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Command the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its boundaries.

The Southern Boundary

3Your southern side shall extend from the wilderness of Zin along the side of Edom. Your southern boundary shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea on the east. 4Your boundary shall turn south of the Ascent of Akrabbim and pass along to Zin. Its extent shall be south of Kadesh-barnea. Then it shall go out to Hazar-addar and pass along to Azmon. 5The boundary shall turn from Azmon to the Wadi of Egypt, and its end shall be at the sea.

The Western Boundary

6For the western boundary, the Great Sea and its coastline shall be your boundary. This shall be your western boundary.

The Northern Boundary

7This shall be your northern boundary: from the Great Sea you shall mark out a line to Mount Hor. 8From Mount Hor you shall mark it to Lebo-hamath, and the boundary shall extend to Zedad. 9Then the boundary shall extend to Ziphron, and its end shall be at Hazar-enan. This shall be your northern boundary.

The Eastern Boundary

10You shall mark out your eastern boundary from Hazar-enan to Shepham. 11The boundary shall go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain. The boundary shall go down and reach the eastern slope of the Sea of Chinnereth. 12Then the boundary shall go down to the Jordan, and its end shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its boundaries all around.”

The Nine and a Half Tribes

13Moses commanded the Israelites, saying, “This is the land that you shall receive by lot as an inheritance, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes and the half-tribe. 14For the tribe of the Reubenites by their ancestral houses and the tribe of the Gadites by their ancestral houses have received their inheritance, and the half-tribe of Manasseh has received its inheritance. 15The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward, toward the sunrise.”

Leaders Appointed to Divide the Land

16The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 17“These are the names of the men who shall divide the land for you as inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. 18You shall take one leader from each tribe to divide the land as inheritance. 19These are the names of the men: from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 20from the tribe of the Simeonites, Shemuel son of Ammihud; 21from the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon; 22from the tribe of the Danites, the leader Bukki son of Jogli; 23from the descendants of Joseph, from the tribe of the Manassites, the leader Hanniel son of Ephod; 24from the tribe of the Ephraimites, the leader Kemuel son of Shiphtan; 25from the tribe of the Zebulunites, the leader Elizaphan son of Parnach; 26from the tribe of the Issacharites, the leader Paltiel son of Azzan; 27from the tribe of the Asherites, the leader Ahihud son of Shelomi; 28from the tribe of the Naphtalites, the leader Pedahel son of Ammihud.” 29These are the ones whom the LORD commanded to allot the inheritance to the Israelites in the land of Canaan.
