Instructions for Possessing the Land
The LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their carved stones, destroy all their cast images, and demolish all their high places. You shall take possession of the land and live in it, for I have given the land to you to possess it. You shall distribute the land by lot according to your clans. To a larger group you shall give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls for each, there shall the inheritance be. According to your ancestral tribes you shall inherit.
But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those whom you allow to remain shall become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land where you live. And then, as I intended to do to them, so I will do to you.”
