Nahum 1

The LORD Is Jealous and Avenging

An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

A jealous and avenging God is the LORD;
the LORD avenges and is master of wrath.
The LORD takes vengeance on adversaries
and keeps wrath for enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger
and great in power,
but the LORD will certainly not leave the guilty unpunished.
The LORD's way is in whirlwind and storm,
and clouds are the dust of the LORD's feet.
The LORD rebukes the sea and dries it up
and makes all the rivers dry.
Bashan and Carmel wither,
and the blossom of Lebanon withers.
Mountains quake before the LORD,
and hills melt.
The earth heaves before the LORD,
the world and all who dwell in it.
Before the LORD's indignation, who can stand?
Who can endure the burning of the LORD's anger?
The LORD's wrath is poured out like fire,
and rocks are broken apart before the LORD.

The LORD Is a Stronghold

The LORD is good,
a stronghold in the day of trouble,
and knows those
who take refuge in the LORD.
But with an overwhelming flood
the LORD will make a complete end of her place,
and will pursue enemies
into darkness.

Trouble Will Not Rise Twice

What are you plotting against the LORD?
The LORD will make a complete end;
trouble will not rise
a second time.
For though they are tangled like thorns
and soaked as with their drink,
they will be consumed
like completely dry stubble.
From you came one
who plotted evil against the LORD,
one who counseled
what is worthless.

The Yoke Will Be Broken

Thus says the LORD:

“Though they are strong and numerous,
even so they will be cut down
and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you no more.
And now I will break their yoke from upon you
and tear apart your bonds.”

Good News upon the Mountains

The LORD has commanded concerning you:

“No offspring will continue your name.
From the house of your gods
I will cut off carved image and cast image.
I will prepare your grave,
for you are contemptible.”
Look upon the mountains—
the feet of one bringing good news,
proclaiming peace!

Celebrate your festivals, O Judah;
fulfill your vows.
For the worthless one
will no longer pass through you;
that one is completely cut off.
