Matthew 27

Jesus Dies

From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness covered the whole land. About three in the afternoon, Jesus cried out loudly, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” That means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Some of those standing there heard him and said, “This man is calling Elijah.” Immediately one of them ran, took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and offered him a drink. The others said, “Leave him alone. Let us see whether Elijah comes to save him.” Jesus cried out loudly once more and gave up his spirit.
