Matthew 28
The Empty Tomb
After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And look—there was a great earthquake, because an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, came, rolled away the stone, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing was white as snow. The guards shook with fear of him and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, because he has been raised, just as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and look—he is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Look, I have told you.” They left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples.
Jesus Meets the Women
And look—Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” They came to him, took hold of his feet, and bowed before him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
The Guards' Report
While the women were going, look—some of the guard went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. After the chief priests gathered with the elders and formed a plan, they gave the soldiers a large amount of money and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him while we were sleeping.’ If this comes to the governor's attention, we will persuade him and keep you out of trouble.” The soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among Jews to this day.
Jesus Commissions the Disciples
The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had directed them to. When they saw him, they bowed before him, but some doubted. Jesus came near and spoke to them: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to keep everything I commanded you. And look—I am with you always, to the completion of the age.”
