Luke 9
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
And calling together the twelve, he gave them power and authority over all demons and to heal diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for the journey—neither staff nor bag nor bread nor money, nor have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And wherever they do not receive you, going out from that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
And departing, they were going through the villages, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Herod’s Perplexity
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was being said by some that John had been raised from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen. And Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he was seeking to see him.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand
And returning, the apostles told him all that they had done. And taking them with him, he withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida. But the crowds learned it and followed him, and welcoming them, he was speaking to them about the kingdom of God and healing those who had need of healing.
Now the day began to decline, and the twelve came and said to him, “Dismiss the crowd, so that going into the surrounding villages and countryside they may find lodging and provisions, because here we are in a desolate place.” But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men.
And he said to his disciples, “Have them recline in groups of about fifty each.” And taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, he blessed them and broke them and was giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And they all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was taken up—twelve baskets of broken pieces.
Peter’s Confession of Christ
And it happened, while he was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And answering, they said, “John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.” And he said to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?” And answering, Peter said, “The Christ of God.”
Jesus Foretells His Death
But strictly warning them, he commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Take Up Your Cross
And he was saying to all, “If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake, this one will save it. For what is a person profited if he gains the whole world but loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
But I say to you truly, there are some standing here who will certainly not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration
And it happened about eight days after these sayings that, taking Peter and John and James, he went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
Now Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep, but becoming fully awake they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. And it happened, as they were departing from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he was saying.
And as he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, the Chosen One; listen to him.” And when the voice had come, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and reported to no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
And it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look upon my son, because he is my only child. And behold, a spirit seizes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it convulses him with foaming, and scarcely leaves him, crushing him. And I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.”
And answering, Jesus said, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” And while he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. And all were astonished at the greatness of God.
Jesus Again Foretells His Death
“Let these words sink into your ears: the Son of Man is about to be handed over into the hands of men.” But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them so that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Who Is the Greatest?
And a dispute arose among them as to which of them might be greatest. But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their heart, took a child and set him beside himself, and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me; for the one who is least among you all, this one is great.”
Anyone Not Against Us Is For Us
And answering, John said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we were hindering him, because he does not follow with us.” But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”
A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus
And it happened, when the days were being fulfilled for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers before his face. And going, they entered into a village of Samaritans to prepare for him, but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.
And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But turning, he rebuked them. And they went on to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus
And as they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
And he said to another, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first allow me to go and bury my father.” But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
And another also said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say farewell to those in my house.” But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
