Luke 8
Women Accompany Jesus
And it happened soon afterward that he was going through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing good news of the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with him, and certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, who were providing for them out of their resources.
The Parable of the Sower
And when a great crowd was gathering, and those from each city were coming to him, he spoke by a parable: “The sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled, and the birds of heaven devoured it. And other fell on the rock, and when it grew up, it withered, because it had no moisture. And other fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And other fell into good soil, and growing up, it produced fruit a hundredfold.” Saying these things, he called out, “The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
The Purpose of the Parables
And his disciples were asking him what this parable might mean.
And he said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables, so that
‘seeing they may not see,
and hearing they may not understand.’
The Parable of the Sower Explained
Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And those on the rock are the ones who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a time, and in a time of testing fall away. And that which fell among the thorns—these are the ones who have heard, but as they go on their way they are choked by cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bring fruit to maturity. But that in the good soil—these are the ones who, having heard the word with a good and upright heart, hold it fast and bear fruit with endurance.
A Lamp Under a Jar
“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those entering may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor secret that will not be known and come to light. Therefore take care how you hear; for whoever has, to him more will be given, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
The True Family of Jesus
And his mother and his brothers came to him, but they were not able to reach him because of the crowd. And it was reported to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” But answering, he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”
Jesus Calms a Storm
And it happened on one of the days that he entered into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” And they set out. And as they were sailing, he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were being filled with water and were in danger. And coming to him, they woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And rising, he rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said to them, “Where is your faith?” And fearing, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Man
And they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. And when he stepped out on the land, a certain man from the city met him who had demons; and for a long time he had not worn clothing, and he was not living in a house but among the tombs. And seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.”
For he had been commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For many times it had seized him; and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles, but breaking the bonds, he was driven by the demon into the deserts. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. And they were begging him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss.
Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding there on the mountain, and they begged him to permit them to enter into those. And he permitted them. And the demons came out from the man and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
And when those tending them saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And they came out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it reported to them how the one who had been demon-possessed was saved. And all the people of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they were seized with great fear. And entering into the boat, he returned.
And the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him that he might be with him, but he sent him away, saying, “Return to your house and declare what God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what Jesus had done for him.
A Woman Healed and a Girl Raised
And when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. And behold, a man named Jairus came, and he was a ruler of the synagogue, and falling at the feet of Jesus, he was begging him to come to his house, because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.
And a woman having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and was not able to be healed by anyone, came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped. And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched me?” And while all were denying it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and press upon you.” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceived power going out from me.”
And the woman, seeing that she was not hidden, came trembling and falling before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she was immediately healed. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
While he was still speaking, someone came from the ruler’s house, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the teacher any longer.” But Jesus, hearing it, answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be saved.”
And coming into the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and the mother. And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she has not died but sleeps.” And they were laughing at him, knowing that she had died.
But taking her by the hand, he called out, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she rose immediately, and he ordered that something be given to her to eat. And her parents were amazed, but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.
