Leviticus 8

Aaron and His Sons Are Ordained

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Take Aaron and his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil, the bull of the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread, 3and assemble the whole congregation at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.” 4Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and the congregation assembled at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 5Moses said to the congregation, “This is what the LORD has commanded to be done.”

Washing and Clothing Aaron

6Moses brought Aaron and his sons near and washed them with water. 7He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, put the ephod on him, and fastened the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him. 8He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastpiece. 9He set the turban on his head and placed the gold plate, the holy crown, on the front of the turban, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Anointing the Tabernacle and Aaron

10Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, making them holy. 11He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to make them holy. 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to make him holy. 13Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons near, clothed them with tunics, tied sashes around them, and bound headbands on them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Bull of the Sin Offering

14Moses brought forward the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering. 15Moses slaughtered it, took the blood, and with his finger put it on the horns of the altar on all sides, purifying the altar. He poured the blood at the base of the altar and made it holy, making atonement for it. 16Moses took all the fat around the entrails, the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and turned them into smoke on the altar. 17But the bull, its skin, its flesh, and its dung he burned with fire outside the camp, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Ram of the Burnt Offering

18He brought forward the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the ram’s head. 19Moses slaughtered it and dashed the blood against all sides of the altar. 20He cut the ram into its pieces, and Moses turned the head, the pieces, and the fat into smoke. 21He washed the entrails and legs with water, and Moses turned the entire ram into smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, an offering by fire to the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Ram of Ordination

22Then he brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the ram’s head. 23Moses slaughtered it and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the big toe of his right foot. 24He brought Aaron’s sons near, and Moses put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, the thumbs of their right hands, and the big toes of their right feet. Then Moses dashed the blood against all sides of the altar.

25He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat around the entrails, the appendage of the liver, the two kidneys with their fat, and the right thigh. 26From the basket of unleavened bread before the LORD he took one unleavened cake, one cake of bread made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat and the right thigh. 27He placed all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they elevated them as an elevation offering before the LORD. 28Then Moses took them from their hands and turned them into smoke on the altar on top of the burnt offering. They were an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, an offering by fire to the LORD. 29Moses took the breast and elevated it as an elevation offering before the LORD. It was Moses’ portion from the ram of ordination, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Seven Days of Ordination

30Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron and his garments, and on his sons and their garments. So he made Aaron and his garments holy, and his sons and their garments with him. 31Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ 32What remains of the flesh and bread you shall burn with fire. 33You shall not go outside the entrance of the Tent of Meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for seven days shall be used to ordain you. 34What has been done today, the LORD commanded to be done to make atonement for you. 35You shall remain at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting day and night for seven days and keep the LORD’s charge, so that you do not die, for so I have been commanded.” 36Aaron and his sons did all the things that the LORD commanded through Moses.
