Leviticus 23

The LORD’s Appointed Times

1The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: The LORD’s appointed times, which you shall proclaim as holy assemblies—these are my appointed times.

The Sabbath

3Six days work may be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a holy assembly. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the LORD in all your dwellings.

Passover and Unleavened Bread

4These are the appointed times of the LORD, holy assemblies that you shall proclaim at their appointed times. 5In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the LORD’s Passover. 6On the fifteenth day of the same month is the Festival of Unleavened Bread to the LORD. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 7On the first day you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no regular work. 8Seven days you shall bring an offering by fire to the LORD. On the seventh day there shall be a holy assembly; you shall do no regular work.”

The First Sheaf

9The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you come into the land that I am giving you and reap its harvest, you shall bring the first sheaf of your harvest to the priest. 11He shall elevate the sheaf before the LORD so that you may be accepted. On the day after the Sabbath the priest shall elevate it. 12On the day you elevate the sheaf, you shall bring a male lamb a year old without defect as a burnt offering to the LORD. 13Its grain offering shall be two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering by fire to the LORD, a pleasing aroma; and its drink offering shall be one-fourth of a hin of wine. 14You shall eat no bread, roasted grain, or fresh grain until that very day, until you have brought the offering of your God. It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

The Festival of Weeks

15You shall count from the day after the Sabbath, from the day you brought the sheaf of the elevation offering: seven complete Sabbaths. 16You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then bring a new grain offering to the LORD. 17From your dwellings you shall bring two loaves as an elevation offering, made from two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour and baked with yeast, as first produce to the LORD. 18With the bread you shall bring seven male lambs a year old without defect, one young bull, and two rams. They shall be a burnt offering to the LORD with their grain offering and drink offerings, an offering by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD. 19You shall also prepare one male goat as a sin offering and two male lambs a year old as a sacrifice of well-being. 20The priest shall elevate them with the bread of the first produce as an elevation offering before the LORD, together with the two lambs. They shall be holy to the LORD for the priest. 21On that same day you shall proclaim a holy assembly. You shall do no regular work. It is a perpetual statute in all your dwellings throughout your generations. 22When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field all the way to its edge, and you shall not gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the resident alien. I am the LORD your God.”

The Memorial of Trumpet Blasts

23The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 24“Speak to the Israelites, saying: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a complete rest, a memorial proclaimed with trumpet blasts, a holy assembly. 25You shall do no regular work, and you shall bring an offering by fire to the LORD.”

The Day of Atonement

26The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 27“Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy assembly for you; you shall humble yourselves and bring an offering by fire to the LORD. 28You shall do no work on that very day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. 29Anyone who does not humble themselves on that very day shall be cut off from the people. 30Anyone who does any work on that very day, I will destroy that person from among the people. 31You shall do no work. It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32It shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves. On the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall keep your Sabbath.”

The Festival of Booths

33The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 34“Speak to the Israelites, saying: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Booths for seven days to the LORD. 35On the first day there shall be a holy assembly; you shall do no regular work. 36Seven days you shall bring an offering by fire to the LORD. On the eighth day you shall have a holy assembly and bring an offering by fire to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall do no regular work.

37These are the LORD’s appointed times, which you shall proclaim as holy assemblies, to bring offerings by fire to the LORD—burnt offering, grain offering, sacrifice, and drink offerings, each on its appointed day— 38besides the LORD’s Sabbaths, besides your gifts, besides all your vow offerings, and besides all your freewill offerings that you give to the LORD.

39On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall celebrate the LORD’s festival seven days. On the first day there shall be complete rest, and on the eighth day complete rest. 40On the first day you shall take fruit from majestic trees, palm branches, branches of leafy trees, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. 41You shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD seven days each year. It is a perpetual statute throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 42You shall live in booths seven days. Every native-born Israelite shall live in booths, 43so that your generations may know that I made the Israelites live in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.” 44So Moses declared to the Israelites the appointed times of the LORD.
