Joshua 15

The Allotment of Judah

1The lot for the tribe of the children of Judah according to their clans extended toward the border of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin southward, at the southernmost end. 2Their southern border was from the end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces south. 3It went out south of the ascent of Akrabbim, crossed to Zin, went up south of Kadesh-Barnea, crossed to Hezron, went up to Addar, turned toward Karka, 4crossed to Azmon, went out to the Wadi of Egypt, and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your southern border. 5The eastern border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan. The border on the north side began at the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. 6The border went up to Beth-Hoglah and passed north of Beth-Arabah. The border went up to the Stone of Bohan son of Reuben. 7The border went up to Debir from the Valley of Achor, and northward turned toward Gilgal, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, which is south of the valley. The border passed to the waters of En-Shemesh and ended at En-Rogel. 8The border went up by the Valley of Ben-Hinnom to the south shoulder of the Jebusite—that is, Jerusalem. The border went up to the top of the mountain that is before the Valley of Hinnom toward the west, which is at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim. 9From the top of the mountain the border curved to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, went out to the cities of Mount Ephron, and curved to Baalah—that is, Kiriath-Jearim. 10The border turned from Baalah westward to Mount Seir, crossed to the north shoulder of Mount Jearim—that is, Chesalon—went down to Beth-Shemesh, and crossed to Timnah. 11The border went out to the north shoulder of Ekron, curved to Shikkeron, crossed to Mount Baalah, went out to Jabneel, and the border ended at the sea. 12The western border was the Great Sea and its coast. This is the border around the children of Judah according to their clans.

Caleb Takes Hebron and Debir

13To Caleb son of Jephunneh Joshua gave a portion among the children of Judah, according to the command of the LORD to Joshua: Kiriath-Arba, father of Anak—that is, Hebron. 14Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, descendants of Anak. 15From there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir formerly was Kiriath-Sepher. 16Caleb said, “Whoever strikes Kiriath-Sepher and captures it, I will give Achsah my daughter to him as wife.” 17Othniel son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it, and Caleb gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. 18When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. She got down from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” 19She said, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of water also.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

20This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their clans. 21The cities at the southernmost part of the tribe of the children of Judah, toward the border of Edom, were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, 22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, 23Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, 24Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, 25Hazor-Hadattah, Kerioth-Hezron—that is, Hazor— 26Amam, Shema, Moladah, 27Hazar-Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-Pelet, 28Hazar-Shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah, 29Baalah, Iim, Ezem, 30Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, 31Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, 32Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: all the cities were twenty-nine, with their villages.

Cities in the Foothills

33In the foothills: Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, 34Zanoah, En-Gannim, Tappuah, Enam, 35Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, 36Shaaraim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim: fourteen cities with their villages. 37Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-Gad, 38Dilean, Mizpeh, Joktheel, 39Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, 40Cabbon, Lahmam, Chitlish, 41Gederoth, Beth-Dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah: sixteen cities with their villages. 42Libnah, Ether, Ashan, 43Iphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, 44Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: nine cities with their villages. 45Ekron, with its towns and its villages; 46from Ekron to the sea, all that were beside Ashdod, with their villages; 47Ashdod, its towns and its villages; Gaza, its towns and its villages, as far as the Wadi of Egypt and the Great Sea with its coastline.

Cities in the Hill Country

48In the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, 49Dannah, Kiriath-Sannah—that is, Debir— 50Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, 51Goshen, Holon, and Giloh: eleven cities with their villages. 52Arab, Dumah, Eshan, 53Janim, Beth-Tappuah, Aphekah, 54Humtah, Kiriath-Arba—that is, Hebron—and Zior: nine cities with their villages. 55Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah, 56Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, 57Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah: ten cities with their villages. 58Halhul, Beth-Zur, Gedor, 59Maarath, Beth-Anoth, and Eltekon: six cities with their villages. 60Kiriath-Baal—that is, Kiriath-Jearim—and Rabbah: two cities with their villages.

Cities in the Wilderness

61In the wilderness: Beth-Arabah, Middin, Secacah, 62Nibshan, the City of Salt, and En-Gedi: six cities with their villages.

The Jebusites Remain in Jerusalem

63But the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive out. So the Jebusites live with the children of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.
