Jeremiah 47

Concerning the Philistines

1The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh struck Gaza:

Waters Rise from the North

2Thus says the LORD:

“Look, waters are rising from the north
and will become an overflowing torrent.
They will overflow the land
and all that fills it,
the city and those who live in it.
Humanity will cry out,
and every inhabitant of the land will wail. 3At the sound of the stamping hooves
of his stallions,
at the rushing of his chariots,
at the roar of his wheels,
fathers do not turn back for their children,
because their hands have become weak, 4because of the day that is coming
to destroy all the Philistines,
to cut off from Tyre and Sidon
every remaining helper.
For the LORD is destroying the Philistines,
the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.

How Long Will You Cut Yourself?

5Baldness has come upon Gaza;
Ashkelon is silenced.
O remnant of their valley,
how long will you cut yourself? 6Ah, sword of the LORD!
How long until you are quiet?
Gather yourself into your sheath;
rest and be still! 7How can it be quiet
when the LORD has commanded it?
Against Ashkelon
and against the seacoast—
there he has appointed it.”
