Isaiah 11
A Shoot from the Stump of Jesse
A shoot will grow from Jesse’s stump;
a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
The spirit of the LORD will rest upon him:
a spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a spirit of counsel and strength,
a spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.
His delight will be in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what his eyes see
or decide by what his ears hear.
He will judge the poor with righteousness
and decide fairly for the earth’s afflicted.
He will strike the earth with his mouth’s rod
and kill the wicked with his lips’ breath.
Righteousness will be the belt at his waist,
faithfulness the belt at his hips.
A wolf will live with a lamb;
a leopard will lie down with a young goat.
Calf, young lion, and fattened animal will be together,
and a little child will lead them.
Cow and bear will graze;
their young will lie down together.
The lion will eat straw like cattle.
A nursing child will play by a cobra’s hole;
a weaned child will reach into a viper’s den.
They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD,
as water covers the sea.
On that day Jesse’s root will stand as a signal for peoples. Nations will seek him, and his resting place will be glorious.
On that day the Lord will again extend his hand, a second time, to recover the remnant of his people left in Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the sea’s coastlands.
He will raise a signal for the nations,
gather Israel’s outcasts,
and assemble Judah’s scattered people
from the earth’s four corners.
Ephraim’s jealousy will depart,
and Judah’s adversaries will be cut off.
Ephraim will not envy Judah,
and Judah will not harass Ephraim.
Together they will swoop on Philistia’s western slopes
and plunder the people of the east.
Edom and Moab will fall under their hand;
the Ammonites will obey them.
The LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of Egypt’s sea.
He will wave his hand over the River
with his scorching wind,
strike it into seven streams,
and let people cross in sandals.
There will be a highway for the remnant of his people left in Assyria, as there was for Israel on the day it came up from Egypt.
