Genesis 6
Humanity’s Corruption
As humans began to multiply across the ground, daughters were born to them. The sons of God saw that the human daughters were beautiful, and they took as wives any they chose.
The LORD said, “My spirit will not remain in humans forever, for they are flesh. Their days will be 120 years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and afterward too, when the sons of God had relations with human daughters, who bore them children. These were the mighty ones of long ago, men of renown.
The LORD saw how great human evil had become on the earth. Every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil, all the time. The LORD regretted making humans on the earth and was deeply grieved at heart. The LORD said, “I will wipe the humans I created from the ground—humans along with livestock, crawling creatures, and birds in the sky. I regret having made them.”
But Noah found favor in the LORD's eyes.
Noah and the Corrupt Earth
This is the account of Noah's family. Noah was righteous and blameless among the people of his time. Noah walked with God. Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
The earth was corrupt in God's sight, filled with violence. God looked at the earth: it was corrupt, because all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.
God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is filled with violence through them. I am about to destroy them along with the earth.
Instructions for the Ark
Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Build compartments in it, and coat it inside and out with pitch. Build it 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Make a roof for the ark, finishing it to within a cubit of the top. Put an entrance in its side, and build lower, middle, and upper decks.
I am bringing floodwaters over the earth to destroy all flesh under the heavens that has the breath of life in it. Everything on the earth will die.
But I will establish my covenant with you. Enter the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives. Bring two of every kind of living creature into the ark to keep them alive with you, a male and a female. Two of every kind of bird, livestock, and creature that crawls on the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
Gather and store every kind of food that can be eaten. It will be food for you and for them.”
Noah did all of this. He did everything God commanded him.
