Ezekiel 38

Gog summoned

1The word of the LORD came to me: 2“Son of man, turn your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Prophesy against him. 3Say: This is what the Lord GOD says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws, and bring you out with your whole army—horses and horsemen, all splendidly equipped, a great assembly with large and small shields, all wielding swords. 5Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all with shield and helmet; 6Gomer with all its troops, Beth-togarmah from the far north with all its troops—many peoples are with you. 7“Get ready! Prepare yourself, you and all the companies gathered around you. Be their guard. 8After many days you will be summoned. In later years you will enter a land recovered from the sword, its people gathered from many peoples onto Israel’s mountains, which had long been desolate. They were brought out from the peoples, and all now live securely. 9You will advance like a storm, covering the land like a cloud—you, all your troops, and the many peoples with you.

A plan against a secure people

10“This is what the Lord GOD says: On that day thoughts will rise in your heart, and you will devise an evil plan. 11You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages. I will attack people at peace, living securely, all without walls, bars, or gates,’ 12to seize spoil and take plunder, turning your hand against ruins now inhabited and a people gathered from the nations, acquiring livestock and property, living at the navel of the earth. 13Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all its young lions will ask you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you gathered your company to take plunder, carry off silver and gold, take livestock and property, and seize great spoil?’ 14“Therefore prophesy, son of man. Tell Gog: This is what the Lord GOD says: On that day, when my people Israel live securely, will you not know it? 15You will come from your place in the far north, you and many peoples with you, all riding horses, a great assembly and a mighty army. 16You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud covering the land. In later days I will bring you against my land, so the nations may know me when I show myself holy through you before their eyes, Gog.

The LORD confronts Gog

17“This is what the Lord GOD says: Are you the one I spoke of in former days through my servants, the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for years that I would bring you against them? 18On that day, when Gog comes against Israel’s soil, declares the Lord GOD, my fury will rise in my anger. 19In my jealousy, in my blazing wrath, I declare: On that day there will surely be a great earthquake on Israel’s soil. 20The fish of the sea, birds of the sky, beasts of the field, every creature that crawls on the ground, and every human being on the earth will tremble before me. Mountains will be torn down, cliffs will fall, and every wall will collapse to the ground. 21I will summon a sword against him on all my mountains, declares the Lord GOD. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22I will bring judgment on him with pestilence and bloodshed. I will rain down torrential rain, hailstones, fire, and sulfur on him, his troops, and the many peoples with him. 23I will show my greatness and holiness and make myself known before many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
