Shared Word Translation

Ezekiel 32

In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

Mortal, raise a lament over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him:

> You compared yourself to a young lion among the nations,
> yet you are like a sea monster in the seas.
> You burst out in your rivers;
> you muddied the waters with your feet
> and fouled their rivers.
Thus says the LORD GOD:

> I will spread my net over you
> in an assembly of many peoples,
> and they will bring you up in my dragnet.
I will cast you on the land;
I will fling you out on the open field.
I will cause every bird of the heavens to settle on you,
and I will satisfy every wild creature of the earth with you.
I will put your flesh on the mountains
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
I will drench the land, flowing from you, with your blood, as far as the mountains;
and the ravines will be filled with you.
When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens
and darken their stars.
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon will not give its light.
All the lights of light in the heavens
I will darken over you,
and I will bring darkness upon your land,
declares the LORD GOD.
I will trouble the hearts of many peoples
when I bring news of your destruction among the nations,
into lands you have not known.
I will make many peoples appalled at you,
and their kings will shudder over you in horror
when I brandish my sword before them.
They will tremble continually, each for their own life,
on the day of your downfall.

For thus says the LORD GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon will come against you.

By the swords of warriors I will cause your multitude to fall—all of them tyrants of nations. They will plunder the majesty of Egypt, and all its multitude will be destroyed.

I will destroy all its livestock from beside abundant waters. No human foot will muddy them again, nor will the hooves of livestock muddy them.

Then I will let their waters settle, and make their rivers flow like oil, declares the LORD GOD.

When I make the land of Egypt a desolation, when the land is stripped of all that fills it, when I strike down all who live in it, then they will know that I am the LORD.

This is a lament, and they will chant it as a lament.
The daughters of the nations will chant it;
over Egypt and over all its multitude they will chant it as a lament,
declares the LORD GOD.

In the twelfth year, on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

Mortal, wail over the multitude of Egypt,
and bring it down—
her and the daughters of mighty nations—
to the depths of the earth,
with those who go down to the pit.
Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down, and lie with the uncircumcised.
They will fall among those slain by the sword.
A sword has been given;
drag her away, with all her multitudes.
The mighty warriors will speak to him from the midst of Sheol,
with his helpers:
“They have gone down;
they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.”
There is Assyria, with all its assembly;
its graves are all around it—
all of them slain, fallen by the sword—
whose graves were placed in the farthest recesses of the pit,
and whose assembly is around its grave.
All of them were slain, fallen by the sword,
who spread terror in the land of the living.
There is Elam, with all its multitude,
around its grave;
all of them slain, fallen by the sword,
who went down uncircumcised to the depths of the earth.
They spread their terror in the land of the living,
and they bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.
Among the slain they made a bed for her,
with all her multitude;
her graves are all around it.
All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword,
because they spread their terror in the land of the living.
They bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit;
she is placed among the slain.
There are Meshech and Tubal, with all their multitude;
their graves are all around them.
All of them are uncircumcised, slain by the sword,
because they spread their terror in the land of the living.
Yet they do not lie with the warriors fallen from among the uncircumcised,
who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war,
who placed their swords beneath their heads
and whose guilt was upon their bones;
for the terror of warriors was in the land of the living.
But you will be broken among the uncircumcised
and lie with those slain by the sword.
There is Edom, its kings and all its princes,
who, despite their strength, are placed with those slain by the sword.
They lie with the uncircumcised
and with those who go down to the pit.
There are the princes of the north, all of them,
and all the Sidonians,
who have gone down with the slain.
Ashamed despite the terror caused by their strength,
they lie uncircumcised with those slain by the sword,
and bear their disgrace with those who go down to the pit.
Pharaoh will see them
and be comforted over all his multitude—
Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword,
declares the LORD GOD.
For I have put my terror in the land of the living,
and he will be laid among the uncircumcised with those slain by the sword—
Pharaoh and all his multitude,
declares the LORD GOD.
