Shared Word Translation
Ezekiel 31
In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
Human one, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude:
Whom do you resemble in your greatness?
Waters made it grow;
the Deep made it high.
Its rivers flowed around its planting,
and it sent out its channels
to all the trees of the field.
Therefore it grew taller
than all the trees of the field.
Its boughs multiplied,
and its branches grew long
because of abundant waters as it spread them out.
In its boughs all the birds of the heavens nested;
under its branches all the animals of the field gave birth;
and in its shade
all the many nations lived.
It was beautiful in its greatness,
in the length of its branches,
for its root was by abundant waters.
Cedars could not rival it
in the garden of God;
cypresses were not like its boughs,
and plane trees were not like its branches.
No tree in the garden of God
resembled it in its beauty.
I made it beautiful
with its many branches,
and all the trees of Eden envied it,
which were in the garden of God.
I gave it into the hand
of a mighty one of the nations.
He will surely deal with it according to its wickedness.
I have driven it out.
Foreigners cut it down,
the ruthless ones of the nations,
and left it.
On the mountains and in all the valleys
its branches fell;
its boughs were broken
in all the ravines of the land.
All the peoples of the earth came down from its shade
and left it.
Upon its fallen trunk
all the birds of the heavens settle,
and among its branches
are all the animals of the field,
so that none of the trees by the waters
may grow high in stature,
or set their tops among the thick boughs,
and none who drink water
may stand tall in their height.
For all of them are given over to death,
to the land below,
among mortals,
with those who go down to the Pit.
At the sound of its fall I made nations tremble,
when I brought it down to Sheol
with those who go down to the Pit.
Then in the land below
all the trees of Eden were comforted—
the choice and best trees of Lebanon,
all who drink water.
They too went down with it to Sheol,
to those slain by the sword—
those who were its arm,
who lived in its shade among the nations.
Whom, then, do you resemble
in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden?
Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden
to the land below.
Among the uncircumcised you will lie
with those slain by the sword.
This is Pharaoh and all his multitude,
declares the LORD GOD.
