Ezekiel 24
And the word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, saying:
Son of man, write down the name of the day, this very day. The king of Babylon came against Jerusalem this very day.
Utter a parable to the rebellious house and say to them, Thus says the LORD GOD:
Set on the pot, set it on;
also pour water in it.
Gather its pieces,
every good piece,
thigh and shoulder,
fill it with choice bones.
Take the choicest of the flock,
pile the bones beneath it,
boil it well,
also let the bones in it be cooked.
Therefore thus says the LORD GOD:
Woe to the city of blood,
the pot with scum in it,
and the scum has not gone from it!
Bring out its pieces one by one,
not choosing them by lot.
For her blood was within her;
she placed it upon a bare rock;
she did not pour it upon the ground
to cover it with dust.
To raise up wrath,
to take vengeance,
I placed her blood on the bare rock,
that it might not be covered.
Therefore thus says the LORD GOD:
Woe to the city of blood!
I too will make the pile great.
Heap on the wood,
kindle the fire,
boil the flesh well,
mix in the spices,
and let the bones be burned.
Then set it empty on its coals,
that its copper may become hot and burn;
so that its filthiness may be melted in it,
its rust consumed.
She has wearied herself with toil;
yet her abundant scum was not gone from her.
Her rust shall be in the fire.
In your filthiness is lewdness.
Since I have cleansed you, you were not clean;
you shall not be cleansed again
until I have caused my fury to rest on you.
I, the LORD, have spoken;
it shall come to pass, and I will do it.
I will not go back,
nor will I spare,
nor will I relent;
according to your ways and your deeds,
they will judge you,
declares the LORD GOD.
And the word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Son of man, behold,
I am about to take from you
the desire of your eyes with a blow;
but you shall not mourn or weep,
nor shall your tears run down.
Sigh, but not aloud;
make no mourning for the dead.
Bind your turban upon you,
put your shoes on your feet,
do not cover your lips,
and do not eat the bread of men.
So I spoke to the people in the morning,
and at evening my wife died.
And the next morning I did as I was commanded.
And the people said to me,
Will you not tell us what these things mean to us, that you are doing?
Then I said to them,
The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Say to the house of Israel,
Thus says the LORD GOD:
Behold, I will profane my sanctuary,
the pride of your power, the desire of your eyes,
and the longing of your soul.
Your sons and your daughters whom you left behind will fall by the sword.
And you shall do as I have done;
you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.
Your turbans shall be on your heads,
and your shoes on your feet;
you shall not mourn or weep,
but you shall pine away in your iniquities
and groan to one another.
Thus Ezekiel shall be to you a sign;
according to all that he has done,
you shall do;
when it comes,
then you will know that I am the LORD GOD.
As for you, son of man,
will it not be when I take from them their stronghold,
the joy of their glory,
the desire of their eyes,
and that upon which they set their minds,
their sons and their daughters,
that on that day
he who escapes will come to you to let you hear it with your ears?
On that day your mouth will be opened to him who escaped,
and you shall speak and be no longer mute.
Thus you shall be a sign to them,
and they shall know that I am the LORD.
