Acts 2
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
When the day of Pentecost had fully arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound came from heaven like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared to them, divided and resting on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
Every Person Hears in Their Own Language
Now devout Jewish people from every nation under heaven were living in Jerusalem. When this sound occurred, the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each person heard them speaking in that person’s own language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Look, aren’t all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia; Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jewish people and converts to Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring God’s mighty works in our own languages!” They were all amazed and perplexed, asking one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocked them and said, “They are full of sweet wine.”
Peter Explains What Is Happening
Then Peter stood with the Eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them: “Fellow Jews and everyone living in Jerusalem, understand this and listen carefully to my words. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy; your young men will see visions, and your elders will dream dreams. Even on my male slaves and female slaves I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will give wonders in heaven above and signs on earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the Lord’s name will be saved.’
