Acts 3
A Man Unable to Walk Is Healed
Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. A man who had been unable to walk from birth was being carried in. Every day people placed him at the temple gate called Beautiful so he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for alms. Peter, along with John, looked directly at him and said, “Look at us.” The man gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I do not have silver or gold, but what I have I give you: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!” Taking him by the right hand, Peter raised him up. Immediately his feet and ankles became strong. He jumped up, stood, and began walking. He entered the temple with them, walking, leaping, and praising God. All the people saw him walking and praising God. They recognized him as the man who used to sit asking for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
Peter Speaks in Solomon’s Portico
While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s, completely astonished. When Peter saw this, he said to the people, “People of Israel, why are you amazed at this? Why are you staring at us as though by our own power or godliness we made this man walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over and denied him before Pilate even though Pilate had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be given to you. You killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. We are witnesses of this. Through trust in his name, his name has made this man strong—the man you see and know. The trust that comes through Jesus has given him this complete healing in front of you all.
Repent and Turn Back
“And now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did. But in this way God fulfilled what he announced beforehand through all the prophets: that his Christ would suffer. Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped away, so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord’s presence and he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God spoke through his holy prophets long ago. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from among your brothers a prophet like me. You must listen to him in everything he tells you. Every person who does not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.’ And all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel onward, also announced these days. You are the children of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your ancestors when he told Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ God raised up his servant and sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you away from your evil ways.”
