1 Timothy 4

Some Will Depart from the Faith

The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose own conscience has been seared, who forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who trust and know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is made holy through God’s word and prayer.

Train Yourself for Godliness

If you place these things before the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching you have followed. Reject godless myths fit for old wives. Instead, train yourself for godliness. Physical training is useful for a little, but godliness is useful in every way, because it holds promise for the present life and the life to come. This saying is trustworthy and worthy of full acceptance. For this reason we labor and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is Savior of all people, especially of those who trust.

Be an Example

Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth. Instead, become an example for the believers in speech, conduct, love, trust, and purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to encouragement, and to teaching. Do not neglect the gift in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Practice these things; give yourself to them so that your progress may be evident to everyone. Pay close attention to yourself and to the teaching. Continue in these things, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
