1 Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord

Now concerning the times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the Lord’s day comes like a thief in the night. When people are saying, “Peace and security,” then sudden destruction comes upon them like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will certainly not escape. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that the day should overtake you like a thief. For you are all children of light and children of day. We do not belong to night or darkness. Therefore let us not sleep like the rest, but let us stay awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of trust and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are doing.

Life Together in the Community

We ask you, brothers and sisters, to recognize those who labor among you, lead you in the Lord, and warn you, and to regard them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. We urge you, brothers and sisters: warn the disorderly, encourage the discouraged, support the weak, and be patient with everyone. See that no one repays evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good for one another and for everyone. Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in everything, because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not extinguish the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast to what is good. Stay away from every form of evil.

Final Prayer and Greeting

May the God of peace himself make you holy completely, and may your whole spirit, life, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful; he will also do it. Brothers and sisters, pray for us too. Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss. I charge you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
