Romans 2

God’s Righteous Judgment

Therefore you are without excuse, O man, every one who judges; for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself, for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.

But do you suppose this, O man, who judges those who practice such things and yet does them yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each one according to his works:

to those who by perseverance in good work seek glory and honor and incorruption, eternal life; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth but obey unrighteousness, wrath and fury.

There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

For there is no partiality with God.

For as many as sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and as many as sinned under the law will be judged by the law; for not the hearers of the law are righteous before God, but the doers of the law will be justified.

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature the things of the law, these, though not having the law, are a law to themselves, who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts accusing or even defending them, on the day when God judges the secrets of men through Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

The Jews and the Law

But if you call yourself a Jew and rely upon the law and boast in God, and know his will and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law—

you therefore who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who proclaim that one must not steal, do you steal? You who say not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

You who boast in the law, through your transgression of the law do you dishonor God? For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.

True Circumcision

For circumcision indeed profits if you practice the law; but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcised keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?

And the one who is physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, will judge you who through the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law.

For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart, in spirit, not in letter, whose praise is not from men but from God.
