Psalm 88

My Prayer Comes before You

O LORD, God of my salvation,
by day I cry out;
by night I am before you.
Let my prayer come before you;
incline your ear to my cry.
For my soul is full of troubles,
and my life draws near to Sheol.
I am counted among those who go down to the Pit;
I am like one without strength,
abandoned among the dead,
like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
for they are cut off from your hand.
You have put me in the lowest pit,
in dark places, in the depths.
Your wrath lies heavy upon me,
and with all your waves you overwhelm me.
Selah.

Do the Dead Rise to Praise You?

You have put my companions far from me;
you have made me an abomination to them.
I am shut in and cannot escape.
My eye wastes away because of affliction.
I call to you, O LORD, every day;
I spread out my hands to you.
Do you work wonders for the dead?
Do the shades rise up to praise you?
Selah.
Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Are your wonders known in the darkness,
or your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Darkness Is My Companion

But I, O LORD, cry to you;
in the morning my prayer comes before you.
Why, O LORD, do you reject my soul?
Why do you hide your face from me?
Afflicted and near death from my youth,
I bear your terrors; I am helpless.
Your burning wrath has swept over me;
your terrors have destroyed me.
They surround me like water all day long;
they close in on me together.
You have put friend and neighbor far from me;
my companions are darkness.
