Psalm 39
I said, “I will keep watch over my ways,
so that I do not sin with my tongue;
I will keep a muzzle over my mouth
while the wicked are before me.”
I was mute in silence;
I kept silent, even from good,
and my pain was stirred up.
My heart grew hot within me;
as I meditated, fire burned.
Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Make known to me, LORD, my end
and the measure of my days—what it is;
let me know how fleeting I am.
Look, you have made my days handbreadths,
and my lifetime is as nothing before you.
Surely every human being, standing firm, is only breath. Selah
Surely a person walks about as an image;
surely they bustle about for breath.
One heaps up,
but does not know who will gather it.
And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope—it is in you.
Deliver me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the reproach of a fool.
I am mute; I do not open my mouth,
for you have done it.
Remove your blow from me;
I am spent by the assault of your hand.
With rebukes for iniquity you discipline a person,
and like a moth you melt away what is precious to them.
Surely every human being is breath. Selah
Hear my prayer, LORD,
and give ear to my cry;
do not be silent at my tears.
For I am a sojourner with you,
a resident alien, like all my ancestors.
Look away from me, that I may brighten,
before I go and am no more.”
