Proverbs 5
Pay Attention to Wisdom
My child,
pay attention to my wisdom;
incline your ear
to my understanding,
so that you may preserve discretion
and your lips may guard knowledge.
The Strange Woman
For the lips of the strange woman
drip honey,
and her mouth
is smoother than oil,
but in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
sharp as a two-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;
her steps take hold of Sheol.
She does not consider
the path of life;
her ways wander,
and she does not know it.
Keep Far from Her
And now, children, listen to me;
do not turn away
from the words of my mouth.
Keep your way far from her,
and do not go near
the door of her house,
lest you give your honor to others
and your years to one who is cruel,
lest strangers be filled with your strength
and your labor go
to the house of a foreigner,
and at the end of your life you groan,
when your flesh and body are consumed,
and you say,
“How I hated discipline!
How my heart despised correction!
I did not listen
to the voice of my teachers
or incline my ear
to those who instructed me.
I was almost in complete ruin
in the midst of the assembly
and congregation.”
Rejoice in the Love of Your Marriage
Drink water from your own cistern
and flowing water
from your own well.
Should your springs be scattered outside,
your streams of water
in the streets?
Let them be yours alone,
and not shared
with strangers.
Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice
in the wife of your youth,
a lovely deer,
a graceful doe.
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
be continually intoxicated
with her love.
Why, my child,
should you be intoxicated
with a strange woman
or embrace the body
of a foreign woman?
The LORD Sees Every Path
For the ways of a person
are before the eyes of the LORD,
and the LORD examines
all their paths.
The wicked are caught
by their own iniquities,
and held fast
by the cords of their sin.
They die for lack of discipline,
and because of their great folly
they wander away.
