Obadiah 1

Edom brought down

1The vision of Obadiah.
This is what the Lord GOD says concerning Edom:
We have heard a report from the LORD;
a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise! Let us rise against her for battle!” 2“Look, I have made you small among the nations;
you are deeply despised. 3The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in clefts of rock,
whose dwelling is high,
who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ 4Even if you soar like an eagle
and set your nest among the stars,
I will bring you down from there,” declares the LORD. 5If thieves came to you, if robbers came by night—
how utterly you have been destroyed!—
would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If grape pickers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings? 6How Esau has been searched through,
his hidden treasures hunted out! 7All your allies have driven you to the border.
Your trusted friends have deceived and overpowered you.
Those who share your bread set a trap beneath you.
There is no understanding in him. 8“On that day,” declares the LORD,
“will I not destroy the wise from Edom
and understanding from Esau’s mountain? 9Your warriors will be terrified, Teman,
so that everyone on Esau’s mountain
will be cut off in the slaughter.

Violence against a brother

10Because of violence against your brother Jacob,
shame will cover you,
and you will be cut off forever. 11On the day you stood aside,
on the day strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
and cast lots for Jerusalem,
you too were like one of them. 12Do not gloat over your brother’s day,
the day of his calamity.
Do not rejoice over Judah’s people on the day they perish;
do not boast on the day of distress. 13Do not enter my people’s gate on the day of their disaster.
Do not gloat over his suffering on the day of his disaster.
Do not reach for his wealth on the day of his disaster. 14Do not stand at the crossroads to cut down his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors on the day of distress.

The day of the LORD

15For the day of the LORD is near for all the nations.
As you have done, it will be done to you;
your repayment will return upon your own head. 16Just as you drank on my holy mountain,
all the nations will drink continually.
They will drink and gulp down
and become as though they had never been. 17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance,
and it will be holy.
The house of Jacob will possess its possessions. 18The house of Jacob will be fire,
the house of Joseph a flame,
and the house of Esau stubble.
They will burn through them and consume them;
no survivor will remain of the house of Esau.”
For the LORD has spoken. 19The people of the Negev will possess Esau’s mountain,
and the people of the foothills the Philistine country.
They will possess the territory of Ephraim and Samaria,
and Benjamin will possess Gilead. 20The exiles of this company of Israelites
will possess the Canaanites’ land as far as Zarephath,
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
will possess the cities of the Negev. 21Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion
to judge Esau’s mountain,
and the kingship will belong to the LORD.
