The Second Census
After the plague, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying, “Take a census of the whole congregation of the Israelites, from twenty years old and upward, by their ancestral houses, everyone able to go out to war in Israel.” Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, “Count them from twenty years old and upward, as the LORD commanded Moses.” These were the Israelites who came out from the land of Egypt.
Reuben
Reuben, the firstborn of Israel. The descendants of Reuben: from Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; from Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. These were the clans of the Reubenites, and those counted among them were forty-three thousand seven hundred thirty. The son of Pallu was Eliab. The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These were the Dathan and Abiram called from the congregation who contended against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah when they contended against the LORD, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them together with Korah when that company died, when the fire consumed the two hundred fifty men, and they became a sign. But the sons of Korah did not die.
Simeon
The descendants of Simeon by their clans: from Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; from Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; from Jachin, the clan of the Jachinites; from Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; from Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. These were the clans of the Simeonites: twenty-two thousand two hundred.
Gad
The descendants of Gad by their clans: from Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; from Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; from Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; from Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; from Eri, the clan of the Erites; from Arod, the clan of the Arodites; from Areli, the clan of the Arelites. These were the clans of the descendants of Gad according to those counted among them: forty thousand five hundred.
Judah
The sons of Judah were Er and Onan; Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The descendants of Judah by their clans were: from Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; from Perez, the clan of the Perezites; from Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. The descendants of Perez were: from Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; from Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites. These were the clans of Judah according to those counted among them: seventy-six thousand five hundred.
Issachar
The descendants of Issachar by their clans: from Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; from Puvah, the clan of the Punites; from Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; from Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. These were the clans of Issachar according to those counted among them: sixty-four thousand three hundred.
Zebulun
The descendants of Zebulun by their clans: from Sered, the clan of the Seredites; from Elon, the clan of the Elonites; from Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. These were the clans of the Zebulunites according to those counted among them: sixty thousand five hundred.
Joseph: Manasseh and Ephraim
The descendants of Joseph by their clans were Manasseh and Ephraim. The descendants of Manasseh: from Machir, the clan of the Machirites; Machir became the father of Gilead; from Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites. These were the descendants of Gilead: from Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites; from Helek, the clan of the Helekites; from Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites; from Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites; from Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; from Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. Now Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters. The names of Zelophehad’s daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These were the clans of Manasseh, and those counted among them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred.
These were the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: from Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; from Becher, the clan of the Becherites; from Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites. These were the descendants of Shuthelah: from Eran, the clan of the Eranites. These were the clans of the Ephraimites according to those counted among them: thirty-two thousand five hundred. These were the descendants of Joseph by their clans.
Benjamin
The descendants of Benjamin by their clans: from Bela, the clan of the Belaites; from Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites; from Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites; from Shephupham, the clan of the Shuphamites; from Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites. The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: from Ard, the clan of the Ardites; from Naaman, the clan of the Naamites. These were the descendants of Benjamin by their clans, and those counted among them were forty-five thousand six hundred.
Dan
These were the descendants of Dan by their clans: from Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan by their clans. All the clans of the Shuhamites, according to those counted among them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred.
Asher
The descendants of Asher by their clans: from Imnah, the clan of the Imnites; from Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites; from Beriah, the clan of the Beriites. From the descendants of Beriah: from Heber, the clan of the Heberites; from Malchiel, the clan of the Malchielites. The name of Asher’s daughter was Serah. These were the clans of the descendants of Asher according to those counted among them: fifty-three thousand four hundred.
Naphtali
The descendants of Naphtali by their clans: from Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites; from Guni, the clan of the Gunites; from Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites; from Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites. These were the clans of Naphtali by their clans, and those counted among them were forty-five thousand four hundred.
The Land to Be Divided
These were those counted among the Israelites: six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty. The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “To these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names. To the larger group you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller group you shall give a smaller inheritance; each shall be given an inheritance according to those counted among them. Nevertheless, the land shall be divided by lot. They shall inherit according to the names of their ancestral tribes. According to the lot their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller.”
The Levites Counted
These were those counted among the Levites by their clans: from Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites; from Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites; from Merari, the clan of the Merarites. These were the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, and the clan of the Korahites. Kohath became the father of Amram. The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. She bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister. To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Nadab and Abihu died when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD. Those counted among the Levites were twenty-three thousand, every male from one month old and upward. They were not counted among the Israelites because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
A New Generation
These were those counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the Israelites in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. But among these there was not one of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai. For the LORD had said concerning them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” Not one of them remained except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
