Micah 6
The LORD’s case
Hear what the LORD says:
“Rise, present your case before the mountains,
and let the hills hear your voice.”
Hear the LORD’s case, mountains,
you enduring foundations of the earth!
The LORD has a case against his people;
he will dispute with Israel.
“My people, what have I done to you?
How have I wearied you? Answer me!
I brought you up from the land of Egypt
and redeemed you from the house of slavery.
I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam ahead of you.
My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned
and what Balaam son of Beor answered him.
Remember the journey from Shittim to Gilgal,
so you may know the LORD’s righteous acts.”
What does the LORD ask?
With what shall I approach the LORD
and bow before God on high?
Shall I approach him with burnt offerings,
with year-old calves?
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my rebellion,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my life?
He has told you, human being, what is good.
What does the LORD ask of you
but to do justice, love faithful kindness,
and walk humbly with your God?
Dishonest measures
The voice of the LORD calls to the city—
wisdom sees your name:
“Hear the rod and the one who appointed it!
Are there still treasures gained by wickedness in the wicked house,
and the accursed, undersized ephah?
Can I be pure with wicked scales
and a pouch of fraudulent weights?
The city’s rich are full of violence;
her inhabitants speak lies,
and deceit is on their tongues.
So I too have made you sick with my blows,
devastating you because of your sins.
You will eat but not be satisfied;
emptiness will remain within you.
You will put things away but not save them;
what you do save I will give to the sword.
You will sow but not reap;
you will tread olives but not anoint yourself with oil,
tread grapes but not drink wine.
You have kept Omri’s decrees
and all the practices of Ahab’s house;
you have walked in their counsels.
So I will make you a desolation,
your inhabitants an object of hissing,
and you will bear my people’s disgrace.”
