Matthew 4
Light in Galilee
When Jesus heard that John had been handed over, he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum beside the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.
This fulfilled what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations—
the people sitting in darkness have seen a great light;
for those sitting in the land and shadow of death,
light has dawned.”
From then on Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has drawn near!”
Jesus calls his first disciples
Walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. “Come after me,” he said, “and I will make you fishers of people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going farther, he saw two more brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. He called them, and at once they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Teaching and healing
He traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and illness among the people.
