Matthew 4

Jesus is tested

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. The tempter approached him and said, “If you are God’s Son, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘A human being does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from God’s mouth.’”

Then the devil took him into the holy city and placed him on the temple’s high edge. “If you are God’s Son,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and,
‘They will lift you on their hands,
so your foot will not strike a stone.’”
Jesus told him, “It is also written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again the devil took him, this time to a very high mountain, and showed him all the world’s kingdoms and their glory. “I will give you all of this,” he said, “if you fall down and worship me.” Jesus said, “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him alone.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended to him.
