Matthew 16

Jesus speaks of his death

21From then on Jesus began showing his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer much from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised on the third day. 22Peter took him aside and began rebuking him: “God forbid, Lord! This will never happen to you.” 23But he turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because your mind is on human concerns, not God’s.”

Taking up the cross

24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life because of me will find it. 26What good will it do a person to gain the whole world but forfeit their life? What can anyone give in exchange for their life? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels. Then he will repay each person according to what that person has done. 28Truly I tell you, some standing here will certainly not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
