Mark 5
The Gerasene Demoniac
And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. And as he came out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him from the tombs. He lived among the tombs, and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles shattered, and no one had the strength to subdue him. And constantly, night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
And seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed down before him, and crying out with a loud voice he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.” For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.” And he asked him, “What is your name?” And he said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
Now there was there on the hillside a great herd of pigs feeding, and they begged him, saying, “Send us into the pigs; let us enter them.” And he permitted them. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand, and were drowned in the sea.
And those who tended them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And they came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the one who had been demonized sitting, clothed and in his right mind—the one who had had the legion—and they were afraid. And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the one who had been demonized and about the pigs. And they began to beg him to depart from their region.
And as he was getting into the boat, the one who had been demonized begged him that he might be with him. And he did not permit him, but said to him, “Go to your house, to your own, and report to them what the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him, and all were amazed.
A Woman Healed and a Girl Raised
And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea. And one of the synagogue rulers came, Jairus by name, and seeing him, fell at his feet, and begged him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be saved and live.” And he went with him. And a great crowd followed him and pressed upon him.
And there was a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered much under many physicians and had spent all that she had and was no better but rather grew worse, having heard about Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she was saying, “If I touch even his garments, I will be saved.” And immediately the flow of her blood dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, turned in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing upon you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he was looking around to see the one who had done this. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.”
While he was still speaking, they came from the house of the synagogue ruler, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” But Jesus, overhearing what was spoken, said to the synagogue ruler, “Do not fear; only believe.” And he permitted no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. And they came to the house of the synagogue ruler, and he saw a commotion, weeping and loud wailing.
And entering, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping.” And they laughed at him. But putting them all outside, he took the father of the child and the mother and those with him and went in where the child was. And taking the child by the hand he said to her, “Talitha koum,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” And immediately the girl rose and began to walk, for she was twelve years old, and they were immediately overcome with great amazement. And he strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and he told them to give her something to eat.
