Mark 15
Jesus Before Pilate
And immediately, early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, having made a plan, bound Jesus and led him away and handed him over to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And answering him, he said, “You say so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, saying, “Do you answer nothing? See how many things they accuse you of.” But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was amazed.
Jesus Sentenced to Death
Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And there was one called Barabbas, bound with the rebels who had committed murder in the uprising. And the crowd came up and began to ask him to do as he usually did for them. And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he knew that because of envy the chief priests had handed him over.
But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas for them instead. And Pilate again answered and said to them, “What then shall I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him!” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him!” And Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, and having flogged Jesus, handed him over to be crucified.
Jesus Mocked
And the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard, that is, the governor’s headquarters, and they called together the whole cohort. And they clothed him in purple, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to greet him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him, and kneeling down they were paying homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple and put his own garments on him. And they led him out to crucify him.
The Crucifixion
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. And they were giving him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments, casting lots for them, who should take what.
And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him was written, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
And those passing by were blaspheming him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! The one who destroys the temple and builds it in three days, save yourself, coming down from the cross!” Likewise also the chief priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; he is not able to save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” And those crucified with him were reproaching him.
The Death of Jesus
And when the sixth hour came, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of those standing by, hearing it, said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave him drink, saying, “Leave him; let us see whether Elijah comes to take him down.” But Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed his last.
And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood opposite him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son.”
Now there were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome, who, when he was in Galilee, followed him and served him, and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.
Jesus Buried
And when evening had already come, since it was Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea came, a respected council member, who also himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. Taking courage, he went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate was amazed that he had already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. And learning from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph.
And buying a linen cloth, taking him down, he wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of rock, and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where he was laid.
