Luke 6
Lord of the Sabbath
Now it happened on a Sabbath that he was passing through grainfields, and his disciples were plucking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And answering, Jesus said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those with him, how he entered the house of God and took the bread of the Presence and ate and gave to those with him, which it is not lawful for any to eat except the priests?” And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
A Man with a Withered Hand
And it happened on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him closely, whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man having the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the midst.” And rising, he stood.
And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it.” And looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. But they were filled with rage and were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.
The Twelve Apostles
And it happened in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he was spending the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Jesus Teaches and Heals
And coming down with them, he stood on a level place, and a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed from their diseases; and those troubled by unclean spirits were being healed. And all the crowd were seeking to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing all.
Blessings and Woes
And lifting up his eyes to his disciples, he was saying:
“Blessed are you poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you
and when they exclude you and insult you
and cast out your name as evil
on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice in that day and leap,
for behold, your reward is great in heaven;
for in the same way their fathers did to the prophets.
But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your comfort.
Woe to you who are full now,
for you will hunger.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
Woe when all people speak well of you,
for in the same way their fathers did to the false prophets.
Love for Enemies
But to you who are listening I say: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other, and from the one who takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours, do not demand it back.
And just as you want people to do to you, do likewise to them. And if you love those who love you, what grace is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what grace is that to you? Even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what grace is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive equal things.
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Become merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
And do not judge, and you will certainly not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will certainly not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be given into your lap. For with the measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”
And he also told them a parable: “Is a blind person able to guide a blind person? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the beam in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ while you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck in your brother’s eye.”
A Tree and Its Fruit
For there is no good tree producing bad fruit, nor again a bad tree producing good fruit. For each tree is known from its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor grapes harvested from a bramble. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good, and the evil person out of evil brings forth evil; for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The Two Foundations
And why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them—I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock; and when a flood came, the river burst against that house and was not able to shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the river burst, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
