Luke 4
The Temptation of Jesus
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tested by the devil. And he ate nothing in those days, and when they were completed, he was hungry. And the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, say to this stone that it become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘A human being shall not live by bread alone.’”
And leading him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,
and the devil said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whom I wish.
Therefore, if you worship before me, it will all be yours.”
And answering, Jesus said to him, “It is written,
‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.’”
And he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
for it is written,
‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to guard you,’
and,
‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
And answering, Jesus said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not test the Lord your God.’”
And when the devil had completed every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding region. And he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and he entered, according to his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read.
And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor;
he has sent me to proclaim release to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to send out the oppressed in release,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
And rolling up the scroll, he gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” And all were speaking well of him and marveling at the gracious words coming from his mouth, and they were saying, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
And he said to them, “Surely you will say to me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself. Whatever we have heard happened in Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’” And he said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. But in truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath in Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
And all in the synagogue were filled with rage when they heard these things. And rising up, they drove him out of the town and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might throw him down. But passing through their midst, he went on his way.
Jesus Heals Many
And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and he was teaching them on the Sabbath. And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority.
And in the synagogue there was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him.” And the demon, throwing him down in the midst, came out from him without harming him.
And astonishment came upon all, and they were speaking with one another, saying, “What is this word, that with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?” And a report about him was going out into every place of the surrounding region.
Jesus Heals Simon’s Mother-in-Law
Then he arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering with a high fever, and they appealed to him concerning her. He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she arose and began serving them.
Jesus Heals Many
When the sun was setting, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. Laying his hands on each one of them, he healed them. Demons also came out from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
Jesus Proclaims the Good News in Other Cities
When day came, he went out and departed to a desolate place. The crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from going away from them. But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this I was sent.” And he was proclaiming in the synagogues of Judea.
