Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole inhabited world should be registered. This was the first registration, when Quirinius was governing Syria. Everyone went to be registered, each to their own town. Joseph also went up from Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to David's town, called Bethlehem, because he belonged to David's house and family. He went to register with Mary, who was pledged in marriage to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She bore her firstborn son, wrapped him in cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no space for them in the guest room.

Good News, Empire, and Unexpected Witnesses

First Look

Imperial registration moves Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, where Jesus is born and laid in a feeding place. Angels announce good news and peace to shepherds, who see, speak, and return praising God.

Look Closely

Luke sets Caesar’s decree beside titles and promises centered on Jesus. The shepherds are ordinary nighttime workers and credible witnesses in the narrative. Luke does not say they were universally despised or ceremonially unclean.

Power and Consequences

Avoid unsupported stereotypes that make shepherds useful only as social outsiders. Attend instead to the clear reversal: imperial power names the world, but heaven’s news is entrusted elsewhere. Welcome becomes real when unexpected testimony changes the hearers.
